“There was some sort of malfunction.  The bed of the tractor-trailer raised up and it struck the sign and the bridge,” Capt. Chris Shipman of the Greenville Fire Department said.

Several other cars were hit with debris.

“We were very fortunate today.  It was 5 o’clock traffic, a lot of people going home from work.  There was damage done to the sign and damage done to the bridge,” Shipman said.

He went on to say it was fortunate there were no injuries.

Officials from the Department of Transportation have inspected the Roper Mountain Road Bridge and said it is safe to travel.

Shipman said that type of wreck is unique.

“In 26 years I have not seen anything quite like this,” Shipman said.
